Chapter 22

KITTY WAS BEGINNING TO THINK THAT IF HER COUNTRY DID GO TO war, she could become a spy. She was getting better at subterfuge, at ensuring Mama didn’t get suspicious regarding how she truly felt about the cadets.

All afternoon, she wandered around the yard, talking briefly with one cadet after another, never lingering too long with anyone in particular, not even Will Wedgeworth, who was her favorite. Although when she did speak with him, she complimented him on how well he’d played during the baseball game. She and Fran had been in the bleachers, rooting for the Brits. Some of the kids they knew had teasingly called them traitors and turncoats. The game was just for fun after all, and she was pretty sure Rhonda, as pitcher, had gone easy on the competition with the balls she’d thrown their way.

When she crossed paths with Will, she’d been mortified to admit she was barred from the dances until she was seventeen. Which was so stupid. A few months wasn’t going to make much difference. But she didn’t argue with Mama, because she was striving to give the appearance of being obedient, so her mom wouldn’t watch her as closely.

Most of her mother’s friends and their families had wandered home as night approached, although many of the cadets and some of Kitty’s classmates had stayed for another round of burgers and to visit. Just before ten, her mother began herding everyone toward the town square. Because so many people were in the group, Kitty was able to slip in beside Will.

With a smile, he wrapped his hand around hers, not that anyone could see, with the shadows weaving in and out around them, the streetlights not able to hold all the darkness at bay. Having never held a boy’s hand in so intimate a setting, she’d had no idea a touch could coil itself around her heart. She reminded herself that he would leave in November after he earned his wings, that she was a momentary distraction from war.

The municipal band was set up in the large gazebo, where the mayor was droning on about the country’s independence. It seemed particularly profound this year, in light of their visitors, though the townsfolk were doing everything to make them feel welcome. When they’d arrived at the town square, she’d noticed that between the two benches that faced Main Street had been added a sign that read, GIVE A BRIT A RIDE TO DALLAS. Any cadet wanting to go into Dallas during their time off just had to wait on the bench and eventually someone would give them a ride.

“Do you have anything like what we did today in England?” Kitty asked quietly.

Will grinned. He had the best grin. “We don’t celebrate giving the Yanks their freedom, but we have fetes and festivals. Jugglers and games, that sort of thing.”

“I bet you’d like our state fair. Lots of games there. And rides. And food. So much to see. We always go for my birthday.
